I know that calendar-wise, fall doesn’t start for another few weeks, but with school starting for us next week, I’m already feeling the loss of the season. It just flew right by. And with me recovering from surgery, I didn’t really get to enjoy it too much. Though I recovered quickly for such an extensive procedure (I won’t go into details too much but it was related to my neurofibromatosis and removing a tumour), we as a family made the decision to not travel this year. Instead, we sent Junior Mintz to various day camps.
The day camps were a hit and miss for him, depending on the theme. He liked art, hated basketball, loved multi-sport and the science-related ones. My parents are definitely happy that we have a STEM kid! Well, a STEM kid who likes sports (but not basketball). I guess he hasn’t really found THE sport yet. Multi-sport is a great way for energetic kids like him to let loose! And maybe discover something that they’d like (but I’m not sure if something like dodgeball qualifies as a “real” sport. I mean, it’s not a varsity sport he could try out for when he’s older (competitive sports starts around Grade 4)).
We started getting notifications to fill in forms/updates for the upcoming year a few weeks back. This means it’s real. School is starting. It’s a good thing that we don’t have to buy school supplies - it’s provided throughout the elementary grades at Junior Mintz’s school! And I don’t have to worry about school lunches either. It’s also part of his tuition. However, uniforms are EXPENSIVE!!!!!
Junior Mintz is pretty excited for the upcoming year. He’s starting Grade 1 and is looking forward to having “big kid recess,” meaning there’ll be two instead of one. I told him that big kid recesses are shorter than kindergarten, so it’s not like he has MORE. It’s the same, just split into two. And that he’ll have more seat work in Grade 1 (remember: energetic kid. These types can’t sit still too long!). Part of me is worried that he’s not prepared enough. He’ll be fine academic-wise, but the nurturing vibe of preschool and then kindergarten isn’t going be there anymore. Grade 1 isn’t playtime. It’s big time, a big change.
I’m sure he’ll enjoy his year, and I will be writing an update soon on how his first week went. Parents of school aged kids, what grade are yours going into? Are they excited? For my readers whose kids have already started, how has the year been so far?
The summer does fly by. I still grieve it every year. It sounds like he had a great summer. I'm glad you're feeling better. Wishing you the best this school year.
